Electrical leads: how electricians get work.

An electrical lead is a person or a business with electrical work to be done, who can be reached. More than most trades, electricians are hired by other trades: the builder, the solar installer and the kitchen fitter all need one. This guide compares the ways electricians get leads, and gives that fact the weight it deserves.

Who hires an electrician

Three kinds of customer, each found differently:

  • Householders, for faults, extra circuits, rewiring and chargers. They search, ask a neighbour, or come through a lead service.
  • Other trades, who need the electrical part of their own job done: builders, solar and heating installers, kitchen and shop fitters.
  • Businesses with premises, for fit-outs, lighting, testing and maintenance.

The second and third are businesses, and businesses can be listed and contacted first. LeadsByCity sells lists of businesses and no homeowner or consumer data, so that is the part of the picture it can help with.

Work that comes through other trades

A trade that needs an electrician on every job is a customer many times a year. Winning one is not like winning one householder: it is closer to winning a small account.

What these businesses want is someone who turns up on the agreed day and whose paperwork is in order. Lead with that. A short message that says which certifications you hold, what area you cover and how quickly you quote will do more than a brochure.

Businesses with premises

Shops, restaurants, clinics, gyms and offices all need electrical work when they open, when they change, and at intervals in between for testing and maintenance. Two openings are worth knowing:

  • Vehicle chargers. Businesses with car parks, such as hotels, gyms and car dealerships, are adding them, and each installation is a commercial job.
  • Lighting. Replacing old lighting is a job a business can see the saving from, which makes it an easy first conversation.

Pick one kind of business, get every one of them in your area, and make one offer. The method is in local lead generation; lists for any niche and city start from the lead finder.

If you sell to electricians

Wholesalers, software companies and agencies who search for electrical leads mean electricians to sell to. For that, the list is the contractors themselves: electrician leads by country and city, with the count and sample rows for each place.

Questions and answers

How do electricians get leads?
Householders come through referrals, local search and lead services. A large share of an electrician's steady work comes through other trades that need electrical work done on their jobs, such as builders, solar installers and HVAC contractors, and through businesses with premises.
How does an electrician get work from builders?
By being known to them before a job starts. List the general contractors in your area, send each a short note with your certifications, your area and how fast you quote, and follow up. Builders keep a small number of subcontractors they trust and add to it when one lets them down.
Are paid leads worth it for electricians?
For small domestic jobs, often not: the lead can cost a large part of what the job earns, and it may have been sold to other electricians too. Measure the cost of each job won before deciding.
Does LeadsByCity sell homeowner electrical leads?
No. It sells lists of businesses only, and no consumer data. For an electrician that means lists of the trades and businesses that commission electrical work. For a company that sells to electricians, it means lists of electrical contractors.
