Data and method

How the data is built and checked.

The lists hold 19,471,768 businesses in 53 niches and 239 countries. This page says what a row is, how the rows are put together, what the numbers on each page mean, and what the data does not claim to be.

What a row is

One row is one business at one address. Each row has the same columns:

Business name and category
The name the business trades under and the niche it is filed in.
Address
Street, city, region, postal code and country.
Phone number
The number the business gives out publicly. Empty when none is known.
Website
The business's own website. Empty when none was found.
Email address
An address on the business's own domain that the business has made public. Empty when it has not published one.

A list is business-level data only. It holds no private individuals, no consumer data and no sensitive data. The Prohibited Data Policy says what can never be in a list or in a file sold on the Lead Market.

How the lists are put together

  • Businesses are gathered from public business information: what a business makes public about itself and what is publicly recorded about it.
  • Records for the same business are merged, so a business appears once.
  • Records with too little to go on are left out. A list is meant to be usable, not as long as possible.
  • Each business is filed under one niche and placed in its country, its region and, where it falls inside one, its city.
  • Email addresses on free webmail services are left out. A list is for reaching a business, not a private mailbox.

What the numbers on a page mean

Every figure on a list page is counted from the rows of that list when the page is shown. The count of businesses is the number of rows you would receive. “With phone”, “with website” and “with email” are the number of those rows where that column is filled.

The 5 sample rows are real rows from the list with the contact details partly hidden. The breakdown by town and by postal code area is counted from the same rows.

A list page is offered to search engines only when its list holds at least 100 businesses. Smaller lists can still be bought; they are just not put forward as an answer to a search.

What the data does not claim

  • It is not a census. A business that has made nothing public about itself may not be in a list.
  • A blank website cell means no website was found, not that the business has none.
  • An email address is one the business has published. An address is called verified only once it has passed a verification check, and the counts keep the two apart.
  • Businesses open, move and close. A row can be out of date by the time you use it.

How often it is refreshed

The lists are rebuilt when new public business information has been processed, and the counts on every page change with them. This page carries the date it was last revised.
