The two, in one line each
- Inbound lead generation
- The buyer makes the first move. They search, find a page of yours, and fill in a form or call. Search traffic, content, referrals and reviews are inbound.
- Outbound lead generation
- You make the first move. You decide which businesses fit, get their contact details, and call, email or write to them.
How they differ
| Inbound | Outbound | |
|---|---|---|
| Who starts | The buyer | You |
| The lead is | Warm: they asked | Cold: they have not heard of you |
| Who chooses the leads | Mostly the market | You, one by one |
| Time to first lead | Weeks to months | Days |
| What it costs | Time and content up front, little per lead later | A list and your hours, for every campaign |
| Volume | Grows slowly, then keeps coming | As much as you can contact |
| Stops when | Rankings or referrals fade | You stop contacting |
When inbound is the better tool
- Buyers already search for what you sell, in words you can write pages about.
- You can wait a few months for results.
- The sale is considered: buyers read before they call.
- You have, or can earn, proof worth showing: results, reviews, examples.
When outbound is the better tool
- You need conversations this month, not next quarter.
- Your customer is a definable kind of business in a definable place.
- Buyers do not know to search for what you do, or do not know they have the problem.
- You want to choose your customers, not take whoever arrives.
Outbound starts with a list. For local businesses, the lead finder shows the size of any niche in any city, and local lead generation is the method from there.
Using both
The two feed each other. Outbound conversations tell you the questions buyers ask, which are the pages worth writing. Those pages give the businesses you contact something to read when they look you up, which raises the reply rate of the next campaign.
A workable split for a new business is most of the effort on outbound for the first three months, moving toward half and half as inbound leads start to arrive. Measure both the same way, by cost per customer, so the comparison is fair. The cost per lead guide explains how.
Questions and answers
- What is the difference between inbound and outbound leads?
- An inbound lead contacted you first, after finding you through search, a referral or content. An outbound lead is a business you chose and contacted first. Inbound leads start warm; outbound leads start cold.
- Is inbound or outbound lead generation better?
- Neither on its own. Outbound is faster and lets you choose who you talk to. Inbound takes longer to build and keeps producing afterwards. Most businesses use outbound first and add inbound over time.
- Is outbound lead generation the same as cold calling?
- Cold calling is one outbound channel. Outbound also includes cold email, direct mail and visiting in person. What they share is that you choose the business and make the first contact.
- What does outbound lead generation need to start?
- A clear definition of the customer, a list of the businesses that fit with a phone number or email address for each, a short message, and a way to record who replied.
